    Laptop for school

    Asus A35U-XE2

Thinking of buying that for school and dual booting win7/ubuntu on it. is asus a reliable brand? I read mostly positive things about that model. I know this is not strictly ubuntu related but advice plz.

Edit: forgot the main reason i posted which is, is that laptop ubuntu-compatible? I'd like to know before I buy it.

    Looks good.

It seems that the graphics driver is in Ubuntu since 11.04. So don't use any lower Ubuntu version.

I have heard good things about Asus computers as well. What I tell people to do in situations like this is to Google the computer they're about to buy with "Ubuntu" and "problem."
It doesn't hurt throwing "Linux" into the mix.

My second piece of advice would be to stay away from Toshiba computers. I love mine, but they almost always have problems with Ubuntu. In 10.10 it was ACPI, in 11.04 it was a dropping internet connection... They can be hard to maintain.

Don't know which ASUS you are considering but mine, a netbook Eee PC 1000, is great. I am dual booting Ubuntu 10.04 and Lubuntu 11.04. No problems, but then I am not using Microsoft Windows.

    Personally,

I would get a Vostro 3000 series with an Intel chipset.

All Intel drivers are packaged in the Linux Kernel now. It will greatly minimize any incompatibility you may have.

    Not to mention,

They have to be some of the best looking laptops...

This is what I recently had.

I loved it so much. And that 17" screen is the best.
You can even buy a 17" Ubuntu notebook cover from the ubuntu store.

Dragging a 17" laptop from class to class?

    I don't know about that...

I have heard good things about Asus computers. Definitely do your research online. Additionally, I would find someone knowledgeable in the computer industry to talk to face to face and sort through their knowledge.

I think you can get a smaller vostro. I would use a Vostro if it were me.

If you're going to be lugging it around school, you'll need to consider weight, size, battery life, etc. What is the purpose of this laptop?

    Some helpful links:
You can find hardware certified for Ubuntu on the Certified Hardware Page.
This page lists netbooks that have been tested with Ubuntu.
Notebook Check offers some comprehensive reviews of laptops.
Notebook Review does reviews as well and has a forum where you can receive help on choosing a notebook.

    Re: Laptop for school

I like the ASUS pick, but agree with the issue of lugging a 17 inch around campus, it will get heavy.
I prefer the specs on the U-series to the A or K series, but it's still an ASUS.

One important check before you buy an ASUS, as they tend to include cutting edge tech:

Video card, Google the model with "linux compatible" to ensure there are drivers or go right to the manufacturers website and check for a driver (ie nVidia or ATI), my ATI hd2600 mobile took almost 2 years to release a driver for Linux.

    Good luck!
